Why should organizations invest in creating physical spaces that employees want to show up to? Well, the answer seems like it should be simple common sense. For starters employee’s well-being is strongly correlated to employee productivity and performance and even a small shift in well-being can have a dramatic impact. Perhaps one of the largest factors of well-being is the physical workspace. Employees who enjoy and like the environments they are a part of will be more engaged, productive, happy, and healthy. There are numerous reports, indices, and studies such as Gensler’s Workplace Index, The Leesman Index, Steelcase, and others that explore the relationship between the physical space and business performance metrics, productivity, and what employees value. So what should organizations be doing and thinking about?

Great art collections are not only found in museums, corporate lobbies or outdoor public spaces. It can also be found in libraries. Libraries are not the same old SHHH! No talking! – cold and boring vaults they once were. Today, they are architectural marvels inside and out. Making a connection with patrons through their cultures and interests beyond books they come for is becoming a real priority. Creating a space that beckons to visitors and lingers in the minds of patrons makes for both an enjoyable and memorable place.
In this article An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights there are some interesting thoughts regarding visual and performing arts in a library setting:
“Visual and performing arts can transform understanding and appreciation of the world in all its cultural diversity. The American Library Association affirms that visual and performing arts can be powerful components of library collections and services. The arts play a vital role in our ability to communicate a broad spectrum of ideas to all people. Developing an understanding and appreciation of visual and performing arts promotes artistic literacy. Libraries should offer opportunities for the community to experience art.
Art can serve personal, political, and aesthetic functions, including personal expression, and social, historical, or political messaging. It may enhance day-to-day living, create visual delight, or challenge the status quo. For the purposes of this interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights, art is defined as work created or designated by an artist, with the ability to provoke an aesthetic response, or affect the human senses in some way. Ultimately art is a product combining the artist’s creativity, the viewer’s perception, and a representation of the culture and time in which the work was produced.”

Art Consultants and Art Consulting firms help more than just the client who uses their services. Consultants also help find projects for talented artists they otherwise may not be able to procure themselves. A majority of artists are interested in either working on commission or are presented with offers to produce works of art on commission at various points during the course of their careers. Many corporate projects we have completed over the years include artwork from local artists because we find that it’s important to incorporate aspects of the surrounding area into the corporate culture. Doing this can encourage the development of deeper and richer relationships with other area businesses and invest support in the local arts community. Here is an interesting article we wanted to share about artists working with art consulting firms and how it can be a great source for finding work. Artists often send postcards or pamphlets to our office and we are always looking for new artists for upcoming projects. Feel free to send us literature regarding your work!
One of our clients is located in Santa Monica and wanted to incorporate all the beautiful sites and even famous local businesses in their city into their artwork that is displayed around the offices. (Image above) This was created by a local artist. Employees absolutely love to look at this amazing wall graphic every day. It reminds them how awesome their city truly is and brings a positive feeling into the office space. When an office space doesn’t feel like a typical cold or boring space but a sophisticated and trendy place where employees want to be – that is a truly beautiful thing.

“The Motivational Benefits of Art in the Workplace” published by Forbes written by Victor Lipman author of “The Type B Manager: Leading Successfully in a Type A World “. His article just begins to touch the surface of how much artwork actually impacts a work environment. Lipman writes about how he was inspired to write his article after reading a similar one via twitter entitled “Having Fine Art in the Workplace is Good for Productivity” by Marissa Brassfield (Article title may have been revised since it’s publication).
His article in Forbes is a great read for anyone who would like to learn more about the relationship between art and corporate environments. Lipman is a management trainer and author who retired from the corporate world in 2012 after 24 years of Fortune 500 company management. He has extensive knowledge first hand in the field of management, both good and bad, effective and ineffective, what works and what doesn’t, he also has a background in psychology with works appearing in the Harvard Business Review (PT).
Not only does Lipman’s knowledge deal with subjects like employee hiring, retention, HR issues etc. but also how the environment the employee is constantly surrounded in has an effect on things as major as reducing stress, increasing efficiency, and boosting creativity.
He is quoted saying “Which to me is where Return on Environment starts becoming tangible. Employees want to feel good about where they work. They want their physical location to be a source of pride. Pride motivates. And that’s good business.”
Here at Corporate Artworks, we share the same vision as Victor in regard to the importance of how you, your employees and clients view your corporate environment as an essential part of your business. You’ve worked hard to build your company, its image, brand, and culture.
